JAMES HARDIE REVIEW

In the mid-1980s James Hardie, an Australian company made innovative changes to fiber cement production, and 30 years later, fiber cement siding is a popular building material on every continent. As you would expect from a market leader, they have an extensive range of products that suit most architectural styles. HardiePlank lap siding is available in heavy cedar-like texturing, smooth boards and with beaded detail too. HardieShingle siding beautifully mimics cedar shingles in straight and staggered-edge versions while HardiePanel vertical siding replicates wood, board and batten and stucco finishes.

More recently Hardie have launched their Artisan range that offers more authenticity with deeper shadow lines and v-groove details. Hardie also have accent trims and soffit to match their siding ranges; and their ColorPlus® Technology finish comes with a 15-year limited warranty that covers paint and labor, protecting against peeling, cracking, and chipping.

ALLURA USA REVIEW

Allura lines were originally produced by CertainTeed and sold to Plycem, Allura’s parent company. Today this US-based fiber cement siding brand rates at the top in independent testing and offers outstanding warranty coverage: up to 50 years for products that have been correctly installed according to Allura instructions!

The other great advantage Allura has over its competitors is a wider selection of colors and styles of siding. Lap siding in cedar and smooth finishes is available in an impressive range of colors and dimensions to give your home a custom look. Shake and shingle siding is available in more sizes and shapes than most manufacturers produce.

Vertical siding in wood and stucco texturing, architectural panels for more modern building designs, and complimentary accent trims and soffit complete the Allura siding product lineup.

GAF

Established way back in 1886, GAF is primarily known in the USA for being the largest manufacturer of commercial and residential roofing products, and in particular for its award winning roofing shingles ranges. So its no surprise that the focus of GAF’s small but perfectly formed fiber cement range is their Weatherside fiber cement shingles.

Perfect for Cap Cod style homes, GAF siding shingles come in a handful of styles including the Purity Shingle line offering straight and wavy edges and a thatched siding style with an appealing rustic look. Widely available through Home Depot stores and with a 25-year limited warranty, GAF siding shingles have a good reputation for being a qulity product.  Note that all the GAF siding only comes in a pre-primed state, so you will have to paint them after to suit your tastes.

NICHIHA

Japanese fiber cement manufacturer Nichiha offers traditional styles of lap and vertical siding in various dimensions plus woodgrain shakes and shingles and stucco-textured panels. But where Nichiha really sets itself apart is with its “modern” architectural wall panel siding that comes in 18 amazing style finishes including ribbed metallic, wood, concrete, three stone finishes and three different brick finishes.

And for the super slick Illumination panels, you can custom order to have them in just about any color you can imagine! Nichiha also offers excellent warranties on their products ranging from 15 to 50 years; and for some products, like their Sierra Premium Shakes, they even offer a limited lifetime warranty!

CERBER

This is the fiber cement siding brand made for BuildDirect.com, one of the leading online sellers of building materials. Cerber Premium 2 Coat solid plank siding features realistic woodgrain in a range of premium colors. The Rustic siding is stained in wood colors, and the resemblance to the real thing is remarkable.

Cerber also makes even edge shingles for the Rustic line and staggered edge shingles for the Premium 2 Coat line, and both are very handsome. In fact, for an in-house product, the range is surprisingly expansive and in particular we ware impressed with the wide color options – the vibrant green Copper Verde and deep Blue Lava shingle panels are particularly alluring. A maximum 25-year warranty is also available.
